Can you make money with Roblox? This guide explores monetization options available on the Roblox game platform.

Roblox is a game platform developed and published by Roblox Corporation․ It provides developers with tools to make their own games for their audience. More specifically, the platform provides customer support, cross-platform compatibility, integrated monetization and transaction handling, and localization tools, among other things.

Developers primarily monetize their Roblox games through the platform’s built-in digital currency called Robux. Players may also earn Robux by trading items with each other.

Roblox is described as follows on its website:

Roblox’s mission is to bring the world together through play. We enable anyone to imagine, create, and have fun with friends as they explore millions of immersive 3D experiences, all built by a global community of developers.

As of early June 2021, Roblox claims to have had 8 million developers and 20 million experiences (games; Roblox has officially used the word “experience” instead of “game since May 2021, according to The Verge). Players have also spent 30.6 billion hours in Roblox between 2008 and December 31, 2020. $329 million dollars have been paid to developers in total as of December 31, 2020.

Roblox allows developers to monetize their games in a number of ways to generate income. Developers do not need to pay fees to start using Roblox tools.

Developers may monetize their games in two primary ways – they may implement one-time purchases or repeatable purchases. Aside from that, access to games may be made paid.

One-time purchases on the Roblox platform are handled via the Game Pass service. Items or features created through this service may only be bought once per player and are assigned to the player permanently. Examples of one-time purchases include avatar items or access to new areas inside a game.

Repeatable purchases are handled by the Developer Product marketplace service. So-called developer products may be purchased more than once by players. Examples of recurrent purchases include in-game ammunition, ability boosts, or in-game currency.

Roblox handles transactions itself, while the selection of monetization methods and strategies is up to the game developer.

Purchases in Roblox are made with Robux (Roblox money) – the platform’s digital currency. Players purchase Robux to then acquire in-game features, items, or special abilities.

Players may purchase Robux when needed or as part of Roblox Premium.

Players may purchase Robux when necessary, or they may buy a premium subscription to receive a specific amount of Robux each month.

Game developers receive a certain percentage of the Robux spent in their games. Roblox provides a breakdown of how it distributes its Robux earnings.

27% of Robux earnings represents the developer share. 25% of this 27% is the developer’s earnings based on transactions before any developer spending on the Roblox platform. The remaining 2% is Engagement-Based Payouts, also known as Premium Payouts.

Here’s how Premium Payouts are described in Roblox’s developer portal:

Premium Payouts allow you to earn Robux based on how engaging your game is. Premium player playtime is being used as a proxy metric to determine how much time is spent in your game and calculate payouts based on that. You don’t need to do anything to enroll in Premium Payouts; they happen automatically and are in addition to earnings from Game PassesDeveloper Products, etc.

The remaining Robux is directed toward platform and hosting support, handling payment processing fees, and other expenses.

How To Exchange Robux For Money?

Developers may exchange Robux for money through the Developer Exchange (DevEx). To be able to cash out their earnings, developers need to:

  • Have a Roblox Premium membership.
  • Have earned at least 100,000 eligible Robux in their account.
  • Be at least 13 years of age.
  • Have a valid DevEx portal account.
  • Be in good standing with Roblox’s terms of use.

Developers need to submit a review request to Roblox to be able to cash out their earnings from the platform.

Roblox has partnered with Tipalti – a third-party payment processor – to handle Developer Echange payments. Tipalti supports payment methods such as ACH, eChecks, PayPal, wire transfers, and checks.

The exchange rate for Robux typically is $0.0035 per 1 Robux, though the platform’s website states:

The exchange rate for cash out may vary based on when you earned Robux, and is subject to change.

For some perspective, 100,000 Robux would be $350 based on an exchange rate of $0.035 per 1 Robux.

It is up to developers to choose a monetization method for income generation. Below are some of the sources of income developers may employ to monetize their experiences.

Making game access paid

Developers may require players to pay a fee to access their games. Roblox writes that the price for paid access may be configured between 25 and 1,000 Robux. Only accounts older than 30 days are able to sell access.

In addition to making game access paid, developers may create paid private servers or VIP rooms inside the game as separate services that players can purchase. These features are typically implemented through the Game Pass service.

Selling avatar clothing

The Roblox platform allows creators to sell clothing items to players. Upon uploading, cosmetic items become available in the Roblox Avatar Shop. Items sold in the Avatar Shop include footwear, headgear, hairstyles, T-shirts, animations, and facial expressions.

Note that Roblox charges upload fees and selling fees for clothing items.

Selling items and special abilities

Players may be given the opportunity to purchase special boosts, weaponry, potions, or other items to accelerate their in-game progress or make their experience more enjoyable. Special items may be either sold via game passes (can only be bought once per player) or developer products (can be bought more than once).

Premium Payouts

Roblox game developers may also earn income based on the playtime of Premium players. To maximize their income, developers may prompt non-Premium players to purchase Premium.

Premium Payouts are not available for Paid Access games.
