Tom Bilyeu Bio/ Background

Tom graduated in filmmaking from the University of Southern California, before starting his career with a relatively small job in a tech startup, Awareness Technologies.

As he said on The Tony Robbins Podcast, he went on to stay a long while with the company, helping them grow and climbing the ladder himself. Bilyeu was made Chief Marketing Officer but he found himself dissatisfied with his role on a personal level.

Bilyeu then turned inwards and questioned what he would love to do that would bring him happiness from a professional vantage point. After realizing that he wanted to help a few of his overweight family members get healthy, he and his wife, Lisa Bilyeu, cofounded Quest Nutrition in 2010. Since they both love filmmaking, together they also co-founded Impact Theory together.

Tom Bilyeu’s wife plays a prominent role in his professional life. Here is the story of how they met in the words of Lisa herself, as she tells it in this interview:

“So I came to America. I was twenty-one, and I just finished film school, and I’d found a brochure that was saying, filmmaking, Universal Studios, backlot, you get to film. It’s like this intense four-week or eight–week journey that you get to make real movies and write and things like that. So I was like, that sounds great. So I come to America. On my first day, I walk in, and my teacher is the person that ends up being my husband.

So flash forward a couple of years. He proposes. I’m Greek, so I have a very big Greek family. So we have a massive Greek wedding.”

As per his LinkedIn bio, written in the third person, Bilyeu’s life goal is listed as follows:

The creation of empowering media-based IP and the acceleration of mission-based businesses. Personally driven to help people develop the skills they will need to improve themselves and the world, Tom is intent to use commerce to address the dual pandemics of physical and mental malnourishment.

Here is an interview in which Tom Bilyeu weighs the pros and cons of living a life in a “perpetual state of joyful frustration”, based on his personal experiences.

Quest Nutrition has a wide assortment of nutritional products, ranging from snack bars and hero bars to protein chips and pizza. Bilyeu’s company is known for making the ‘Quest Bar’, which since its launch has become the number one selling nutrition bar on earth.

Bilyeu explained in his Forbes interview that all the Quest Nutrition products are manufactured at the company’s headquarters in California:

“Originally we wanted to contract manufacture everything. We only decided to become our own manufacturers when everyone told us our products couldn’t be made. So you could say that we manufacture in California (where we happen to be based because it’s such an amazing corner of the world) out of necessity.”

According to Money Inc,

Tom had a lot of help and advisement when he established Quest Nutrition in 2010. His wife Lisa assisted along with their partners Ron Penna, Shanan Penna, and Mike Osborn. The company saw a significant growth period from 2010 through 2013 with an astounding growth rate of 57,000%. More than 200 employees were hired and the revenue soared to more than $82 million by 2014.

In 2016, Tom Bilyeu and his wife left the company to focus on their next project – Impact Theory.

On August 21, 2019, globenewswire, com reported that the Simply Good Foods Company and Nutrition Quest have entered “a definitive agreement under which Simply Good Foods will acquire Quest for $1.0 billion in cash, or approximately $870 million net of tax benefits, on a cash-free and debt-free basis.”

Impact Theory Overview

The answer to the question “What Is Impact Theory” is a bit nebulous, as there are seemingly no straightforward key elements to it. Here is how the official website puts it:

“Impact Theory’s mission is to pull people out of the Matrix, at scale, by giving them an empowering mindset. We do that by creating the best-in-class entertainment and educational content.”

The mission statement is also followed by this:

“We are very aware of how vague that is, and I will punch myself in the mouth if all we succeed in doing is motivating people.

We want to build things directly and help others build things that solve what we believe to be the world’s biggest challenges. That’s why we’ll be running this company like an economic engine and not a non-profit.”

To that end, Tom and/or his wife Lisa host interview talk shows on their YouTube channel. The interviews are then made available as podcasts as well. Bilyeu has hosted a large number of guests on the Impact Theory show, including popular figures as Gary Vaynerchuk, Robert Kiyosaki, Tai Lopez, and many more.

The Impact Theory podcast episodes are available on the official website, Apple Podcasts as well as on Spotify.
