Who Is Eric Weinstein?

Eric Ross Weinstein is a mathematician, economist, commentator, and thought leader. He is the brother of evolutionary biologist and commentator Bret Weinstein.

Weinstein is known as the author of the term “intellectual dark web”, which describes groups of people whose viewpoints starkly contrast with what is considered mainstream and orthodox.

According to the Institute for New Economic Thinking, Weinstein has frequently “championed scientific risk taking, the importance of self-taught scientists in their role of connecting fields, and the need to limit academic credentialism and rent-seeking behavior from hindering foundational breakthroughs in basic research.”

Eric Weinstein Bio And Background

According to Eric Weinstein’s LinkedIn profile, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. He also received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mathematics from Harvard University.

In 2005, Weinstein became a co-founder at New York-based hedge fund Natron Group. He served as Natron Group’s Principal until 2012.

Eric Weinstein’s theory of Geometric Unity

In May 2013, Weinstein shared his theory called Geometric Unity with Marcus du Sautoy – a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford and contributor for Guardian. Guardian science correspondent Alok Jha also talked about the theory in an article titled “Roll over Einstein: meet Weinstein.” Weinstein gave a lecture about Geometric Unity at Oxford around the same time as well.

The theory attempts to unify Albert Einstein’s Field Equations with the Yang-Mills equations and the Dirac equation. Einstein’s Field Equations describe the curvature of space-time and the theory of gravity, while the equations of Yang-Mills and Dirac represent the theory of particle interactions on a quantum level.

These theories successfully describe the physical world in their domains but are not compatible with each other.

Science media – including New Scientist and Scientific Americanmet the theory with skepticism and criticized Weinstein and du Sautoy for not making the theory available to physicists for debate and proper evaluation (e.g. via a scientific paper).

In April 2020, Weinstein talked about his theory on his YouTube channel.

In April 2021, Weinstein published a paper describing Geometric Unity online. However, as Vice pointed out, the paper ends with a disclaimer stating that Weinstein “is not a physicist” but an “entertainer” and that the paper itself is merely a “work of entertainment.”

Eric Weinstein And “Intellectual Dark Web”

Eric Weinstein coined the term “intellectual dark web” after his brother Bret resigned as a Professor of Biology from The Evergreen State College in 2017. Bret Weinstein resigned due to controversy surrounding his criticism of how Evergreen had decided to hold “the day of absence” that year.

Weinstein stated that he came up with the term semi-ironically.

According to Press Reader, the “intellectual dark web” describes “those whose ideas fall foul of governing liberal orthodoxies and who, largely locked out of mainstream media outlets, are having a rolling conversation on podcasts, YouTube, social media and in public lectures.”

The circle of the “intellectual dark web” includes psychology professor and YouTube personality Jordan Peterson, conservative commentators Dave Rubin and Ben Shapiro, as well as Bret Weinstein and his wife Heather Heying.

Eric Weinstein is the host of “The Portal” podcast. The podcast is described as “an exploration into discovery” and features conversations with thought leaders and entrepreneurs such as Sam Harris and Balaji Srinivasan.

Weinstein also has a YouTube channel where he has shared some of his “The Portal” episodes and talked about trending news.

As of July 2021, Weinstein’s podcast and YouTube channel were dormant, with the most recent episodes and videos being several months old.
